wacom pen only registers when tablet is connected to one port

hello. ive recently purchased a wacom intuos for my mac. the pen seems to only register on the tablet when i plug it into a specific one of the two ports on my mac or through bluetooth. the tablet has the small white light when it is physically connected to the mac on either port, so i think the tablet is connected regardless of whichever port. the pen is just not registering on the tablet for one of the ports. ive tried plugging in a charger into the port where the pen wont register and the mac charges, suggesting that the issue is not with the port. can anyone tell me why this is and what i can to do fix it?

  Welcome to the community. 
  From your description, sounds like your mac's USB port might be defective. I would recommend checking with Apple.
