Unstoppable scroll bar when working with the Wacom Pen in Adobe Illustrator
Dear community and experts!
Me and a lot of other users have a problem with Illustrator (already since several versions) in combination with the use of the Wacom Intuos Pro pen (also in the latest driver and some before).
System & apps:
Windows 11 Pro
Illustrator 28.7 (and earlier)
Wacom Intuos Pro, Art Pen 2, Wacom driver 6.4.7-3 (and earlier)
Problem description:
When the Devices / Wacom option is switched on in the Illustrator preferences, the
the scrollbar "hooked" on the pen as soon as you try to use it with the pen. You can then no longer leave the scroll bar, you can only scroll and try to exit the programme somehow. After a restart, the programme will work again - but only as long as you don't try to scroll with the pen again.
As soon as you deactivate the Devices / Wacom option in Illustrator's preferences, the scroll bar works perfectly again.
Unfortunately, this is not really an option, as the brush pressure for brush strokes is then no longer available.
The problem has been known for some time - and solutions are being sought in various forums. E.g. here:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/sticky-vertical-scroll-wacom-intuos-pro-l-with-pen-2-illustrator-28-6-windows-11/m-p/14815374#M417854 (There's also a video at the very end that shows the problem)
@João here in the community gave me a great solution to the many problems (control panels in Photoshop and other programmes could not be used properly with the pen, etc.) that were related to using Windows Ink and switching to Wintab (https://support.wacom.com/hc/de/community/posts/24544239908631-Problems-with-pen-operation-input-in-Photoshop-Lightroom-etc)
This has not only helped me, but also many others with the same or similar problems, to whom I have passed on your solution.
In Photoshop, a special text file had to be added to the Photoshop settings. However, there doesn't seem to be a corresponding option for Illustrator.
Does anyone have a solution or a good idea that has not yet been tried and could help?
Thx a lot in advance,
Hubertus

I have been trying to reproduce this but I have not yet been succesful. I also check the driver team to have a look.
What you wrote and the other comments in the thread suggest this is a bug on Adobe's side so I'm not sure what we can do from Wacom side yet.

Hi @João
Thanks for your reply and the effort again!
Yes, the problems don't seem to occur on all machines either - but they are certainly reproducible on some (even in different system and programme constellations). Also on my PC.
However, it is also suspected that the problem lies with Illustrator. But maybe your developers will find a clue.
In any case, I will post the result in the Adobe Community. So that the Adobe experts can search for the error. After all, Wacom is officially supported by Adobe.
Best regards, Hubertus

Hello Hubertus Leischner,
I tried again today with a slightly different setup and still could not reproduce. I also saw in the thread that one user was able to confirm that when rolling back to a previous version of Illustrator, the issue was gone. Have you tried that already?
And yes, we will support Adobe in anyway we can.

Hi @João
Thank you for your new attempt!
Yes it is, with an old version of Illustrator the problem did not and does not occur. Probably a hint that it must be Illustrator. But of course I want to be able to work with the current version of Illustrator without any problems. That's why I need another solution.
A few days ago a new update of Illustrator was released - unfortunately still with the same bug :(
Perhaps the driver team had a hunch that I could post in the Adobe forum as a hint for the Adobe developers?
Greetings, Hubertus

I can't tell for sure, but the behaviour seems to point out that Illustrator is somehow not recognizing the pen tip up event when using Windows Ink.
I think it would be safe to start there.

I have the exact same problem - always had, with various WACOM tablets, various drivers (updated all the way) and multiple versions of Illustrator CC. The nightmare workflow and UI issues because of this, incl. work lost in this screen doom loop are frustrating. Not sure if this Adobe's or Wacom's responsibility. But tbh, for a leading tablet not to work glitch-free with one of the leading illustration tool is a joke.
I've had this on Windows 10, now again on Windows 11, latest versions of drivers and with an older Bamboo pen + touch and a brand new Wacom One.).

Hello Nadja von Massow, João
Yes, unfortunately the problem has been known for some time. And very frustrating. And it applies to some users.
Unfortunately, the cause does not seem to lie solely with Adobe, Wacom or Microsoft. It seems to be a combination of everything. That's probably why nobody really feels responsible. Adobe should probably find an approach, but there nothing is happening.
@João - Thanks for the tip. However, I have turned off Windows Ink on my computer. But maybe the same problem also applies to the Wintab API?
